Gaza in Context This teaching film combines lecture, animation, typography, and footage from Palestine to upend the ahistorical narrative that has cast the Gaza Strip as a national security issue. By emphasizing the role of Hamas and diminishing the question of Palestine, Israel has collapsed conditions in Gaza with asymmetric conflicts, or what has come to be known as the “global war on terror.” Gaza in Context is an attempt to re-frame the issue to place greater emphasis on the broader question of Palestine and to explain Israel’s policy toward the Gaza Strip in a settler-colonial framework.
Gaza: A Gaping Wound In 2014, an Israeli military offensive in Gaza persisted for 51 days, claiming the lives of 2,200, injuring 11,000 more, and leaving 100,000 homeless. The war, so closely watched by the media, was measured and counted, but the statistics cannot reflect the loss of a loved one, the bombing of a family home, or the trauma that comes after the ceasefire. Part of a multimedia project that can be explored at obliteratedfamilies.com, Gaza: A Gaping Wound tells the stories of the survivors.
